Photo Projects

This is where you will find the information you need to undertake your 12 photo projects.

Read the brief carefully and then plan how you want to carry it out. If you don't like your first attempt, don't worry, work out what's wrong and have another go.

These projects are designed to be fun and teach you some important things about taking magical photos.

OK if you're ready, let's get started!

Photo Project 1

Your first photo project is to find any household item, like a door handle, a watering can, a garden spade or anything ordinary that is close to hand. Your challenge is to take the most creative photo of that item. Think about your camera angle, the quality of light and the composition you want.

Photo Project 2

The brief for your second photo project is to make sure you can get your shots in sharp focus. For this photo we want you to find an animal of any size or type and make the animal the most important part of your photo. Set your camera to ensure your focus is correct and get a great, sharp photo to complete the project.

Photo Project 3

This project is a test of how well you look at your photo and make sure there are no distracting things in either the foreground or background before you press the shutter. Find a pleasing scene somewhere and try to use an interesting light, say early morning or late afternoon. Make sure there are no things in your shot that will distract from the main photo. Look at the example here and make sure you don't have the same problems.

Photo Project 4

In this project we want you to take a photograph using something to "frame" your main subject. In our example we have photographed the airplanes using the frame of some chestnut trees to give our picture scale and also added interest. Don't try and take a shot like this just yet as its very tricky to get the planes in just the right spot. Think about shooting through an archway or an open door to create your frame around the main subject. If you look carefully there are lots of things that you can use to create a frame and make a great photo for this project.

Photo Project 5

For this project it’s all about getting your subject big in your photo.

Lots of the shots that I took on my first camera have my subject somewhere off into the distance of the shot. This is partly because the camera that I was using didn’t have a zoom lens – but it was partly because I didn’t understand how getting in close would help capture the detail of a subject.

So remember to use the zoom on your digital camera if you have one, but don’t forget that using your legs to move closer can achieve the same results!

Choose your subject first and then “go in close” and make a big impression!

Photo Project 6

In photography the most important element that we use to capture a magical photo is the light we use.

This may seem strange but we need to understand how different light can influence our photographs. Its not your camera, or the lens that make a great photograph, it’s the quality of the light.

For this project you can choose any subject you wish. But please ensure that your photo shows how well you understand the importance of the light you used for your shot. Be dramatic, be adventurous and let the light make your shot a competition winner.

Photo Project 7

For your project in module 7 you need to find a scene with trees or tall plants and then photograph it from the lowest viewpoint that you can. Think about the time of day that you want to take your shot, so that it adds impact to the photo. We are looking for a dramatic shot in this project so choose your subject well.

Photo Project 8

Now it's time to have some fun and experiment with night time photography. You can choose any subject that you feel will create a magical night time photo. Take your tripod if you have one or rest your camera on a firm surface to avoid a blurry image. Try to get as many lights in your shot as possible and if they are moving, like a car headlight, then even better. Take plenty of shots and then choose the best one, it's a good amount of trial and error to get a real winner, but have fun.

Photo Project 9

Abstract, abstract, abstract... That's all we want you to do for this project. Think creatively and choose an object in your house or garden that you can take an abstract photo of. We don't need to know what the object is, that's the whole point of abstract photography. In fact the more difficult it is to identify the object the better your abstract photo will probably be.

Photo Project 10

Whether you're photographing people, pets, sports,  or wildlife, action photography is about storytelling. How much better to show a surf border coming down a mountain, rather than standing by a board? Think how much better you'll have captured the event by showing them on the slopes, kicking up the snow. Action photos are all about being prepared and being in the right place.

For this project, take your camera out and photograph any subject that is moving quickly. Try to stop the action in your shot but capture the drama of a fast moving subject. Good luck.

Photo Project 11

Your task for this project is to use the Portrait setting on your camera. The module has explained what type of effect this mode will create, now we want you to go out and try for yourself. You can choose to photograph a single subject or a group of two or three, it could be a person or it could be a pet. What we want to see is a really stunning portrait with a super sharp subject and an out of focus background.

Photo Project 12

Your final project is to choose  a favourite photo you've taken during the course and add some text to it. If you have downloaded Picasa then you will find it a fun and easy task to try. You can choose lots of different styles of text and make it virtually any colour you want. You can place it anywhere on the photo and adjust the size to suit. So find your photo and see just how easy and simple it can be to add your text. It's a great technique for making your own birthday cards or invitations.

Have fun!
